Vermicomposting

What is Vermicomposting?

Vermicompost is the end-product of the breakdown of organic matter by some species of earthworm. Vermicompost is different than other types of composts because it is much richer in many nutrients. Vermicompost is beneficial to the soil in several ways. It improves the physical structure of the soil, improves the biological properties of the soil, improves water holding capacity, and enhances germination and plant growth. Red worms are the most common worm used in vermicomposting. Vermicompost consists mainly of worm castings and decayed organic matter.

You can feed the worms most forms of kitchen waste such as vegetables or fruits, tea leaves, tea bags, coffee grounds, or egg shells. You can also use things such as dead leaves, grass clippings, paper, etc. Avoid feeding meats, dairy products, oily or greasy foods, salt, or vinegar.
